Occupational Therapy

Helping kids participate & thrive in their

Community

A new Paediatric Occupational Therapy service, specialising in early childhood development and Autism.

CommuneOT is passionate about supporting babies, children and families to participate and thrive in their communities.

We see children in their natural environments. This could be at home, day care, pre-kindy or school. It could also be at the park, beach, shops or local library. This allows natural opportunities for parents, caregivers, educators and teachers to develop their capacity to support the child, and help everyone to work together. It also allows the child's environment to be adapted to support their participation.

CommuneOT provides evidence based occupational therapy services that are guided by family centered, strength based, and neurodivergent affirming principles. CommuneOT is also committed to listening to autistic voices to guide practice.

CommuneOT sessions are individualised to suit the needs and goals of each child and their family. They may involve 1:1 sessions, parent coaching sessions,  telehealth sessions or group sessions (coming soon).  Parent and caregiver involvement and family centered practice are an essential part of CommuneOT. We aim for parents to feel empowered to support their child's development and participation in daily occupations (activities).

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapists working in early childhood support the development and engagement of children and their families in their everyday routines, by addressing occupations. These occupations include play, rest and sleep, activities of daily living, education, and social participation. Occupational Therapists believe that improving participation in meaningful occupations has a positive impact upon a child's  health, well being and participation in life.

Some examples of ways CommuneOT can support your child and family:

Play:

Supporting play participation, supporting play with parents and peers, exploring play and sensory play preferences

Rest and sleep:

Establishing a bedtime routine, exploring calming and restful occupations, exploring sensory preferences impact upon sleep.

Activities of daily living:

Establishing routines, supporting development of self-care skills and participation in feeding/mealtimes, dressing, grooming and toileting.

Education:

Supporting participation in classroom routines, fine motor and handwriting activities, supporting school transitions, exploring and supporting sensory preferences within the classroom, capacity building of education staff.

Social  participation:

Supporting social participation across environments, communicating with family and peers, joining in with others, playing with family and peers

Your OT

Lucy is a Paediatric Occupational Therapist with over ten years clinical experience working with young children and their families. Lucy has specialist knowledge and interest in the areas of early childhood development and Autism.

Currently in Perth there is a high demand for quality early intervention services, and a shortage of experienced therapists. After learning that children are sitting on lengthy waitlists to access services, Lucy decided to start CommuneOT.

Lucy is passionate about providing high quality, evidence based, holistic and family centered occupational therapy, in the natural environment.

She loves working with children and families to support their child's development through meaningful occupations and routines. Lucy knows first hand the many health and well being benefits of occupations that involve getting out in nature, and she loves to wind this into her OT sessions.

Lucy loves learning and is always furthering her knowledge. She is committed to evidence based practice. Lucy has attended professional development courses on various topics relevant to the paediatric population, including sensory processing, mealtimes, parent coaching, Autism, play and children's yoga. Lucy is also trained in the SCERTS (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, Transactional Supports) approach and the CO-OP  (Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance) approach.
